The Capital of Blue Dreams: Capri Island

In Italian, there are two words used to describe the color blue: the familiar “blu”, which means blue, as we know it in English, and “azzurro”, which captures the magical blue of the sky. On Capri, these two shades of blue come together, making this special Italian island even more enchanting.

Located in the Bay of Naples off the Amalfi Coast, the volcanic island of Capri begins to captivate you even before the ferry docks. With its colorful houses, scenic hills, fascinating caves, and beautiful beaches, Capri offers a breathtaking experience.

Capri is a fairly large island with two main towns: Capri and Anacapri. The town of Capri, located on the eastern side, houses the island’s hotels, nightclubs, and boutiques, forming the more central and touristy area. Anacapri, on the western side, spreads across the slopes of Monte Solaro, offering unparalleled views. The main port, Marina Grande, serves as the gateway to the island and is where ferries arrive. The marina, which also hosts a funicular and numerous restaurants, remains popular year-round. The shopping street Piazza Umberto I and Via Camerelle, home to Gucci and Louis Vuitton stores, highlight Capri’s luxurious side.

Getting There

The only way to reach Capri is by boat or ferry. Ferries depart from Naples, Sorrento, or Positano.

Flying to Naples from Turkey and then taking a ferry is the easiest option, though flights to Rome are often cheaper. From Rome, you can take a bus or train to Naples or Positano and catch a ferry from there. The ferry ride takes between 30 minutes and an hour.

While Capri can be visited as a day trip with ferries arriving in the morning and departing around 5–6 PM, staying at least one night allows for a more relaxed experience.

Unforgettable Moments in Capri

Some experiences are unique to Capri and absolutely worth discovering. Step onto the island and let your adventurous spirit take over, exploring all of its hidden treasures while enjoying the sun, lemon trees, bougainvillea, and the endless blues of the horizon.

Boat Tour

The first thing to do in Capri is undoubtedly a boat tour. A short, scenic journey around the island is the best way to see its caves, beaches, cliffs, and limestone formations. Tours typically last about two hours and circle the entire island. You’ll have the chance to visit the White Grotto and Green Grotto, enter the Blue Grotto, and explore the Faraglioni rocks and Punta Carena lighthouse. This tour allows the blue of Capri to seep into your soul while the gentle sea breeze brushes your hair.

Getting Around the Island

Cars are prohibited on the island, so you can explore by bus, taxi, boat, walking, funicular, chairlift, or scooter.

Most of the main settlements are on elevated terrain, so reaching the central square requires taking the funicular. From the ferry or boat landing, walk to the right, and you’ll see the funicular ahead. Tickets are purchased from the booth diagonally across from the funicular entrance — there are no tickets sold inside.

Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra)

The world-famous Blue Grotto is Capri’s most popular sea cave. Access requires waiting in line, but the visual spectacle created by sunlight reflecting through the water inside is unforgettable. Only rowboats can enter due to the small size of the cave, and visitors can stay inside for just 5 minutes, as the site is protected. The experience and the view leave lasting memories.

Faraglioni Rocks

The Faraglioni rocks are among Capri’s most iconic landmarks. Rising just off the southern coast, the three rock formations are a symbol of the island. Each has a name: Stella (still connected to the mainland), Faraglione di Mezzo (separated by the sea), and Faraglione di Fuori or Scopolo (extending into the sea). These rocks have stood majestically in the infinite sea for centuries. You can view them on a boat tour, from the Gardens of Augustus, Monte Solaro, or while walking along the coastal path.

Monte Solaro

For the best views on Capri, head to Monte Solaro, the island’s highest point. From here, the panoramic scenery — including the Faraglioni rocks, Mount Vesuvius, Ischia Island, Sorrento, and the Bay of Naples — is mesmerizing. Access is via a chairlift, and the views along the ride are spectacular.

Gardens of Augustus (Giardini di Augusto)

This small botanical garden, with lush greenery and colorful flowers, adds charm to the island. It’s an ideal spot for a short break to relax, inhale the soothing floral scents, and enjoy the sunshine.

Capri Cuisine

Italian cuisine speaks for itself: fresh tomatoes with olive oil, the aromas of thyme and lemon, delicious pasta, cocktails, and pizza that can tempt even the most disciplined eaters. Although bad meals are rare, it’s worth checking out the best Capri restaurants.

For drinks and views, Capri Rooftop, next to the Gardens of Augustus, overlooking the Faraglioni rocks, is a perfect spot.

La Palette, with its white tables and green-and-blue dominated scenery, offers both excellent cuisine and a visual feast. Ristorante Panorama, especially at sunset, provides an unforgettable dining experience among lemon groves and the island’s natural beauty. For gelato, Buonocore Gelateria is a must, and for coffee, try Gran Caffe in Piazzetta or Da Alberto, operating since 1946.

Capri, like Bora Bora, Lake Como, Malibu, and Mykonos, is a favorite among celebrities, so you might spot Heidi Klum, Rihanna, Beyoncé, Kylie Jenner, and others while walking the streets.

During summer, the island gets very crowded, so visiting in May–June or September is recommended.
