About Maasai Mara

Maasai Mara is located in southwestern Kenya, about 250 km from Nairobi, covering 1,510 km². It borders Tanzania and is connected to Serengeti National Park. The Maasai people, who inhabit the region, give the reserve its name—“Mara” also refers to the river flowing through the area. Nearby, you can even visit a Maasai village to experience local culture firsthand.

You can reach Maasai Mara via a 45-minute flight from Nairobi on small bush planes from Wilson Airport. If you book a safari package, the tour company usually provides transport from Nairobi, so no additional flight ticket is required. A typical drive takes about five hours to reach the heart of Maasai Mara.

When to Visit

The best months to visit are July through September, coinciding with the famous Great Migration. During this period, the Big 5—elephant, leopard, buffalo, lion, and rhino—move from Serengeti in Tanzania to Maasai Mara. You’ll also see large herds of antelopes. Witnessing this migration in person is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Safari Tips

• Dress: Wear beige or brown clothing to blend with the environment and avoid attracting insects.
• Shoes: Closed shoes are recommended for comfort, protection from scorpions, and dusty roads.
• Insect protection: Use mosquito repellent.
• Rules: Do not approach animals closer than 25 meters. Safaris run from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Follow park regulations carefully.
• Seating: For shared safaris, sit in the front or middle of the vehicle for the best views.

Note: You’ll need your passport for the first day of entry; afterwards, it’s not necessary to carry it.

Maasai Mara vs. Serengeti

While Serengeti covers a vast 30,000 km², Maasai Mara is smaller at 1,510 km². This makes it easier to spot a variety of wildlife in just a few days. Serengeti requires at least a week for a proper safari, while Maasai Mara is perfect for 2–3 days of wildlife adventure.

Safari Tours and Camps

We booked a 2-night, 3-day safari with Karibu Safaris, which included all meals, park fees, and transfers. The open-top safari vehicle provided incredible views and easy wildlife spotting.

Manyatta Camp

Our camp featured spacious tents with private bathrooms and 24/7 security. Electricity is usually off between 10:30 PM and 6:30 AM, enhancing the wilderness experience. While luxurious options exist, the focus here is on the raw beauty of nature rather than comfort.

The Journey

On the drive from Nairobi, we stopped at the Great Rift Valley, the world’s largest fault line, stretching over 6,400 km. Its breathtaking viewpoints create a sense of infinity. Along the way, included lunch stops and bathroom breaks make the journey smooth.

Maasai Village

Optional visits to Maasai villages allow you to explore traditional homes and watch cultural dances (additional fee applies). While touristy, it’s still a glimpse into Maasai life.
